The estate was built in 1549, by the Doge who defeated the Venetians in the battle in Piran Bay. To thank God, he had a monastery and a church built.The relics found in the church date back to the 9th century. After the desecration in the 19th century, the building turned into a sanatorium for lung diseases, making it one of three such sanatoriums in Croatia. Except St. Petra, the second spa was located in Savudrija next to the lighthouse itself, and the third on the island of Lošinj.
