Located in Idanha-a-Nova, a Portuguese border village in the district of Castelo Branco, statistical region of the Center and sub-region of Beira Baixa, part of the traditional province of the same name, with about 2,100 inhabitants.

It is the seat of the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, the fourth largest municipality in Portugal with an area of 1,416.34 km², but with only 8,340 inhabitants (2021), subdivided into 13 parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Penamacor, to the east and south by Spain, to the west by Castelo Branco and to the northwest by Fundão.

On December 11, 2015, UNESCO considered Idanha-a-Nova as a City of Music, as part of the Creative Cities Network program.

It is also in this village that the last three national camps (Acanac 2007, Acanac 2012 and Acanac 2017) of the largest Portuguese scout organization, Corpo Nacional de Escutas, which had more than 22000 scouts (Acanac 2017) took place.

Its patron saint is Nossa Senhora do Almortão, a pilgrimage celebrated on Monday of the second week after Easter, a day on which it is a municipal holiday.

A 11 de Dezembro de 2015 a UNESCO considerou Idanha-a-Nova como Cidade da Música, como parte do programa Rede de Cidades Criativas.

Também é nesta vila que decorreram os três últimos acampamentos nacionais (Acanac 2007, Acanac 2012 e Acanac 2017) da maior organização escutista portuguesa, Corpo Nacional de Escutas, que contaram com mais de 22000 escuteiros (Acanac 2017).

O seu padroeiro é Nossa Senhora do Almortão, uma romaria celebrada na Segunda-Feira da segunda semana a seguir à Páscoa, dia em que é feriado municipal.
